First few steps out of bed and my heel is agony

Started about three weeks ago and it is getting worse rather than better. The first five or six steps in the morning are genuinely painful, right in the heel, sharp rather than achy. After I have been walking about for a few minutes it settles down to almost nothing.

By the evening it is back if I have been on my feet all day.

Is this something I can sort out with better shoes and some attention, or is it a see somebody situation? I have been putting off making an appointment about what I assumed was a minor thing.

Worst on the first steps of the day and easing as you move about is a very recognisable pattern and it is not a skincare problem, so no amount of cream or filing will touch it. This is one to take to a professional rather than to a forum, because the useful part is somebody looking at how you stand and what your shoes are doing.
