Nearest anything is two hours away, is it worth the trip?

I live somewhere fairly remote. The nearest city with anything happening is a solid two hours each way, and that is on a good day with the trains behaving.

I would like to meet people from this world at some point but I keep talking myself out of the journey. Four hours of travel for a couple of hours in a cafe feels like a lot, and if it turns out to be awkward or nobody clicks, I have burned a whole Saturday and the return trip is going to feel very long.

Do people travel for these? Is it worth it, or is that only sensible once you already know some of the faces? And is there any point trying to start something closer to home when I honestly do not know whether there are five other people within an hour of me?
